Food Guide: Durban

Since the holidays have approached suddenly and this year is finally over we thought that it would be a good idea to share our experience of some of the restaurants that we visited earlier this year. So here goes:

I highly recommend going to The Address. The food is of exceptional quality and the taste is amazing. The owner is always polite and helpful. We had steak done in 2 different sauces; masala and garlic which were done to perfection, as well as prawns done 2 ways. The masala prawns are really to die for. I highly recommend the prawns. I think that the dessert was not worth it so skip dessert and go somewhere else.

Billal Foods is conveniently located on North Beach. The Mutton Bunny Chow that I had here was really tasty, the gravy was beautifully thick and full of flavour, the meat just fell off the bone and the potatoes were like beautiful clouds. We also tasted their Chicken Burger which was good too. But my recommendation is definitely the Mutton Bunny Chow. YUM!

The food at Kikis is good but the décor is not the best. I suggest you try the chicken Tikka with pita, chips and a salad. We also tried the tremezzini but it was just a pita cut up. The chicken never disappoints. So if you are in Overport doing your shopping stop and grab a meal at Kikis.

  • Hub Caps Woodfire Pizza, 118 Cowey Road Morningside, 031 309 3203 or Unit 3 Umgeni Junction Umgeni Business Park, 031 263 0042

There’s 2 Hub Caps in Durban but we visited the one on Morningside. This pizza was divine. We ordered the 3 cheese pizza as well as the GTO which was fanflippentastic. The GTO has slices of meatballs and lemon with a coriander sauce and pepperdews. OMG this was really really really goooooood. To accompany the pizza they have some pretty amazing gourmet milkshakes. Mmmmmmm.

If you have a sweet tooth or like ice cream or just plain human I strongly suggest you try this place out. They have a food truck at the Green Hub, Blue Lagoon or at Caminettos on Sparks Rd. These ice cream sandwiches are amazing. You can choose between cookies, brownie and macarons as your base and a variety of ice creams and toppings. I highly highly recommend this place and if you go to the Green Hub, Blue Lagoon you can spend the afternoon at the lagoon which is quiet beautiful. Follow them on Instagram for where they are going to be at.

  • Nino’s at Moses Mabida Stadium, +27 (0) 31 303 7657

The food at Nino’s does not ever disappoint. The ambience is amazing, it is always buzzing and amazing to be here. I had the Lasagne and it was gorgeous, perfectly cheesy and rich and tomatowy and just amazing. We also had a sweet chilli chicken prego roll which was delicious. Highly recommend this place whether you are starving or just looking for something light.

I also recommend going to Sunkist they have amazing prawns and chicken. When we went they were closed for renovation but they never disappoint, try it out and let us know.

Happy Eating
